Nelson Hardiman’s newest Partner, Lara Compton, is a healthcare problem solver who serves as outside general counsel for healthcare and life sciences companies.

“Lara’s regulatory expertise and leadership has been invaluable to the firm and our clients,” said the firm’s Founder, Harry Nelson. “She brings deep experience in healthcare operations, data privacy and security and other complex regulatory areas of our practice, and her research in virology and immunology greatly informs our Life Sciences Practice. Her experience in large law firms and as in-house counsel for health systems helps her solve some of our clients’ most complex problems.”

Compton, who was elevated to Partner with the new year, moved from King & Spalding to Nelson Hardiman in 2016. She has been a significant contributor across the firm’s regulatory practice, from assisting institutional clients with various regulatory compliance, licensing, and operational matters to helping venture-backed clients navigate complex regulatory regimes in the development of new health technology and digital health-related products and services.

“Healthcare innovation and regulation are quickly changing,” says Compton. “I enjoy working with clients to understand their objectives and provide practical guidance that addresses legal issues and accounts for development and growth.”

Compton has led multiple HIPAA breach investigations and has counseled clients on applicable reporting requirements. She also advises on compliance with federal and state anti-kickback and self-referral laws (e.g. Stark), and related fraud and abuse issues.

Fellow Partner Hope Levy-Biehl, Chair of the firm’s Regulatory Practice, says Compton is, “invaluable at handling our institutional provider clients’ regulatory and operational matters.”
